| Taking off: The first Australian MRH-90 on its initial flight. |
|
THE first of Australia’s 46 MRH-90s has conducted its maiden flight.
The aircraft flew for 1½ hours during the test flight in Marignane, France, on March 29 and the Eurocopter test crew were delighted with its performance.
The first four MRH-90s are on schedule for delivery by the end of 2007, and the first fuselage of the 42 aircraft to be assembled in Australia arrived in Brisbane on March 27.
The Government decided to acquire 12 MRH-90 troop lift helicopters for the Army in August 2004.
Then in June 2006 it announced that an additional 34 MRH-90s would be purchased to replace Army’s Black Hawks and Navy’s Sea Kings.
The project value for the total acquisition of 46 aircraft is around $4.2 billion.
The project also includes the construction of new or upgraded facilities in Townsville, Oakey, Nowra and Holsworthy.
