THE Army Reserve’s top soldier has had his wish come true.
Commander 2 Div Maj-Gen Ian Flawith told nearly 140 reservists deploying to the Solomon Islands that he had long campaigned for their involvement in operations.
The soldiers – the largest group of NSW reservists deployed as a formed body since World War II – were farewelled in a ceremony at RAAF Base Richmond on April 4.
On arrival in the Solomon Islands they began to provide support for tsunami relief efforts.
Maj-Gen Flawith said the time had come for reservists to share the operational load of the ADF and he was clearly proud that it was now a reality.
“In 2003 after the Army Reserve had provided a platoon to the Solomon Islands I had approached the Land Commander about 2 Div providing a whole company,” he said. “Last year, we were given the chance.”
Defence Minister Brendan Nelson said the soldiers, drawn mainly from 8 and 5 Bdes, would take “a lead role in helping to maintain security in our region. We wish them a successful and peaceful mission and await their return”.
For 41RNSWR’s Pte Katie Bland, a university student, the opportunity to serve overseas was appealing.
“I would like to work for AusAid one day and be involved in organisations that make a difference, so to do this with a big organisation like the Army is excellent,” Pte Bland said.
The skilled contingent comprises a headquarters and an infantry company, supported by signallers, armoured corps personnel, engineers, drivers and medics. |
