| Norforce on course By Cpl Corinne Boer Edition 1164, April 19, 2007 |
| TRADITIONAL skills unique to Norforce members will be complemented by improved literacy and numeracy standards through a new program scheduled to be in place by July. The literacy and numeracy program will consist of courses that run from two to three weeks and will be conducted in conjunction with the NT’s Employment, Education and Training Department. Norforce CO Lt-Col Michael Rozzoli said the program aimed to increase individual capability and, over time, collective capability. “It’s tailored at Army tasks and Army issues and it’s not necessarily asking our soldiers to go back to school but is a provision of military training and military tasks,” he said. “Our broad philosophy among our indigenous soldiers is we’re encouraging the modern warrior based on traditional values and some of the skills and the tools of trade required by the modern warrior include military aspects of literacy and numeracy.” The program is designed to help Norforce complete trade and promotional courses. It will run in indigenous communities and will consist of both self-paced training and teacher-led instruction. Students will also have access to laptops with tailor-made software distributed from HQTC-A. “It’s another enabler to help to the pathway of employment within Norforce by expanding opportunities for soldiers. It’s a little like a snowball effect; the more utilities they have in employment in Norforce then it provides options for wider employment in ADF or the civil community,” Lt-Col Rozzoli said. |
