NEARLY 50 family members and friends of the nine victims of the 2005 Sea King helicopter disaster gathered at a memorial service at Russell Offices on April 2 to mark the accident’s second anniversary.

A small dedication also took place on Nias in Indonesia where a permanent memorial now stands to honour the lives, service and sacrifice of those who died in the accident – Leuts Matthew Davey, Jonathon King, Paul Kimlin, Matthew Goodall, PO Stephen Slattery and LS Scott Bennet of the RAN and Sqn-Ldr Paul McCarthy, Flt-Lt Lynne Rowbottom and Sgt Wendy Jones of the RAAF.

At the Canberra ceremony, Chaplain Jim Curtain said, “They laid down their lives in the service of their country in providing humanitarian aid.”

Defence Minister Brendan Nelson said the Board of Inquiry report into the cause of the accident was expected to be made public in May.
