SOLDIERS from 2RAR helped Queensland Reds players tackle the obstacle course and hone their marksmanship principals during the Super 14 rugby team’s goodwill visit to Lavarack Barracks.
It was all in a good cause with players signing and donating a Queensland Reds jersey toward a fundraiser for the Red Shield Appeal, 2RAR’s official charity.
WO2 David Trill coordinated the visit and devised the challenges.
“As the Reds were up here to promote the sport and expressed interest in visiting the Army, it was a good opportunity to show them the physical and skills challenges involved in soldiering and at the same time raise some dollars for 2RAR’s nominated charity,” he said.
The visit involved a tour of Lavarack in a 3/4 Cav Regt Bushmaster before swapping sports uniform for DPCUs to take on the pleasures of obstacles such as the water-filled bear pit.
The Reds’ fitness, strength and team work shone through as they bounded through the obstacles with 2RAR’s finest and were coached through the WTTS, with the best score coming in at a decent 120mm average.
Reds player Geoff Abram said while the experience was gruelling – coming as it did on a weekend off from the Super 14 competition – it was appreciated.
“It was great to have a crack at some of the challenges the Army life offers and meet the soldiers from the infantry and cavalry – they’re great blokes,” he said. |
