COOKING under the shadow of the highest mountains in the world during Operation Pakistan Assist meant that turning out food in hygienic condition was a tough job.
The dedication and professionalism demonstrated by LCpl Patrick Hatton during the humanitarian effort – which followed a devastating earthquake in Pakistan in October 2005 – has led to him being awarded AACC Soldier of the Year.
ALTC Commandant Col David Shields presented the award at Lavarack Barracks last month.
Col Shields commended LCpl Hatton on his skill, drive and leadership, particularly during his time in Pakistan.
Deployed with 5 Avn Regt, LCpl Hatton worked with US and local catering personnel in the base dining facility, and it wasn’t long before his natural leadership ability showed through.
During the deployment, he was awarded the US Army Achievement Medal and catered at functions attended by high-ranking US and Australian dignitaries.
A skilled and respected chef in civilian life, but unhappy with the routine, LCpl Hatton joined the Army for adventure – and in Pakistan he found it.
“The challenge of it all appealed to me and it still does,” he said. |
