RMY teams had to be content with playing second and third fiddle to Navy at the Kapooka 12s Australian football competition.

Eleven men’s teams and two women’s teams contested the competition at the Wagga base on March 17 with HMAS Cerberus beating Army Recruit Training Centre 42-19 in the men’s grand final, with the Army Logistics Training Centre II third.

The winners received a cheque for $1800, the runners-up took home $900 and the third placegetter received $500.

The women’s grand final was won by Navy, which defeated ADFA in a spirited contest.

Navy will defend both its men’s and women’s titles at the Australian Services Australian Football Association championships in Canberra at Ainslie Oval from April 16-20.

One of the organisers, WO2 Gary Sutcliffe, said The event was well coordinated and ran smoothly throughout.

“The Kapooka 12s was a successful event and the on-field competitiveness and evenness of the competition was a highlight of the day.

“Teams were very well prepared and this was displayed in the standard of football played.”
