ARMY made light of its lack of preparation to vanquish both Navy and Air Force and win the Western Australian Triservice Australian Football Championship at Rockingham in Perth in March. Navy was no match for Army in the competition opener, losing 1.2 (8) to 13.8 (96). When Navy also lost to Air Force 18.8 (116) to 3.1 (19) despite improving their score after a strong first quarter, it was left to Army and Air Force to play for the title. Air Force took to the field confident for the final after the resounding win against Navy, but soon was tested by the more aggressive Army approach and eventually lost 3.2 (20) to 6.4 (40). Cpl Lee Jones-Fraser, PTI with 13CSSB and Army team organiser, said he was very pleased with how the Army team performed. “Navy and Air Force managed to find funding and time to train, but we managed to win all our games – not bad for a team thrown together in two weeks,” he said. He said the Army team comprised members of 13 Bde, with the average age over 35. “We didn’t have the time to train together and were pulled together within two weeks of the game.” Cpl Jones-Fraser said that Army would be better prepared next year, but, tongue-in-cheek, he suggested that the emphatic results achieved this year, it might pay just to sit back and throw a team together at the last moment. |
