Racing pedigree: Pte Catherine Brown at the ADF track and field championships.
CHAMPION blood surges through the veins of Pte Catherine Brown as she hurdles her way towards success.

The bubbly athlete is the daughter of Commonwealth Games champion Garry Brown, who won the gold medal in the 400m hurdles in 1982.

Garry Brown now trains his daughter and pushes her to the limits to be her best.

The hunger for competition is in the genes as Pte Brown is determined to repeat her father’s winning performance and more.

“My goal is Commonwealth Games, Olympics, world championships, I’d like to hold the Australian record, I’d like to race Jana Pittman one day and give her a run for her money,” she said.

The tough truckie from 2/14 LHR (QMI) will not let anything deter her from winning.

Not only has she recovered from a broken ankle, which put her out for four seasons, but she also suffered a fall during a warm-up session before competing in the 400m hurdles at the Australian track and field championships in Brisbane from February 23-25.

Pte Brown finished first in the event, beating her arch-rival with only two months of preparation.
“My dad trains me hard and doesn’t take any cheek from me. It’s a good way to train. When I fell over he said to me ‘don’t let it affect your race, don’t let it stop you, and it didn’t’,” Pte Brown said.

“My dad has been my on and off coach since I was a teenager and a lot of people think that because he’s my dad he’d be more lenient.

“He’s probably harder on me because I’m his daughter as he wants the best for me”.
Pte Brown follows a strict training regime with daily sessions that involve a lot of gym work and incorporates cycling and swimming.

Pte Brown’s fiancé, Jordan Newell, coaches her at the gym and she says he works her to absolute breaking point.

“He makes me cry at the gym because he’s that hard on me, and if I do cry because I’m so tired he makes me do the exercise again,” she said.

She plans to continue the hard-paced training to get ready for September when the athletics season starts up again.
