New blood at hockey trials

Edition 1164, April 19, 2007

WHILE several old stars were missed at the Victorian Combined Services hockey trials at HMAS Cerberus, several newcomers seized the chance to show their potential.

Missing this year were Sgts Russell Bingley and Phil Southern, with newcomers AC Chris Fazel and Smn Josh Nevermann catching the selectors’ eyes as three trials were played.

The trials on March 17 helped selectors choose two teams for the ADF National Hockey Championships in Albury from June 1-8.

Insufficient numbers of available Army and Air Force personnel made it impossible to stage the trials as an interservice carnival this year.

Unfortunately, personnel form the Albury area were notable absentees because of commitments to a Freedom of Entry to Albury celebration.

However, three games were able to be played with team compositions changed each time.

Of the 25 who attended, 19 were from HMAS Cerberus and the rest from Victoria Barracks in Melbourne.

There are positions available on the women’s team and anyone interested in playing should contact LS Ricky Dobson at ricky.dobson@defence.gov.au
