ARMY has reclaimed the Queensland Interservice Cricket Trophy after four years following their win over Air Force in the South East Queensland Interservice cricket carnival at Ipswich.

In an exciting three days of cricket from March 27-29, Army and Air Force slugged it out at Ipswich, near Brisbane.

South East Queensland Army defeated Qld RAAF in the carnival’s two 50-over one-day games to secure the trophy, but were defeated in the close-fought 20-Twenty game.

In game, Army made a very competitive total of 8/242 after its 50 overs, with Capt Matt Suen 79, Maj Jim Johnston 46 and Cpl Mark Brown 26 not out.

In reply, the Air Force compiled 8/185 off their 50 overs with Sgt Mitchell Dockett 54 not out.

Cpl Justin Falla was Army’s main wicket taker with 2/24 off his 10 effective overs.

In game two, Army were bowled out for 150 with Pte David Nash 50 and Cpl Mark Brown 31 the top scorers. The key bowler for RAAF was Flt-Lt Leo Lochran who took 5/35 off 10 overs to have Army on the ropes.

But the RAAF was no match for Army’s opening bowler, Cpl Laurie Wood, who took 4/14 off seven devastating overs to rip through the top order.

Pte Don Mander then produced a nine-over spell that resulted in 4/32. RAAF were bowled out for 92, ensuring the trophy’s return to Army.

The 20-Twenty match proved the closest contest of the carnival with RAAF out to salvage some pride as they stormed to 157 off their 20 overs.

Flt-Lt Leo Lochran top scored for RAAF with 36.

Pte James Wright was Army’s best bowler with 3/30 off his four overs.

After a solid run chase, Army were bowled out for 147 with Pte Craig Leahy making 40 and Pte James Wright 33 not out.

The South East Queensland Army players collected the three individual awards for the carnival, with Capt Suen winning the batting award, Cpl Laurie Wood the bowling award and Cpl Mark Brown the player of the carnival.
