Graphic retelling of battle

300
Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, David Wenham, Dominic West
3/5 stars

BASED on Frank Miller’s graphic novel, 300 is the bloodthirsty retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae, where King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) joined 300 of his Spartan warriors to fight to the death against Xerxes’ invading Persian army. I found 300 to be much better than I anticipated.

The action was excellent with graphic fight scenes and plenty of gore. Although I should add that the plot was a little transparent at times.

If you see it make sure you’re in the mood for the cartoon meets virtual-fantasy genre similar to films such as Sin City.

Fuzzy treat

Hot Fuzz
Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright
4/5 stars

THIS was a rare treat.

I saw this with no idea what it was about, and found it to be the best film I’d seen in ages.

Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg), London’s finest policeman, is transferred to the small English village of Sandford where his zero-tolerance policing style isn’t overly welcomed.

But Angel is convinced that what appears to be a sleepy village is in fact a hot-bed of murder and intrigue as a series of suspicious deaths occur.

Hot Fuzz is a real departure from the typical Hollywood-style script and is full of surprises and dark humour as it goes from initially plausible Midsummer Murders to Shaun of the Dead.

It’s somewhere in there and I don’t want to spoil it too much for you so just go and see it.
