WILD weather and flash floods may have closed roads, cut power and slowed the arrival of the Abrams to Darwin earlier this month, but for the staff at HQ Norcom it was just business as usual.

The tri-service team at Larrakeyah Barracks monitors cyclone activity 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Although the stormy weather patterns in the area caused some minor damage and delays, Cmdr Ainsley Morthorpe, HQ Norcom operations officer, said the weather pattern was nothing out of the ordinary. He said the rough weather had come from Arnhem Land and slowly moved west, passing through Darwin.

“Cyclone season begins in November and goes to the end of April,” he said. “It’s been a more intense second half of the season.”
The recent weather system brought powerful storms, lightning and winds upwards of 60 knots.

Communications also tops the list in cyclone preparedness priorities, as Norcom essentially provides support to NT emergency services.

Sig Janice Collins said the recent weather kept her hard at work.

“We had a few problems with boats out in the water,” she said.
