| Moves to identify diggers Edition 1162, March 22, 2007 |

SIBLING rivalry was expected among three brothers when they attended Kapooka, but the staff PROGRESS has been made in identifying the remains of six World War I Australian soldiers discovered in Belgium last August. Research revealed the site where the remains were unearthed was a temporary burial ground for Australian soldiers killed in a series of 1917 battles known as the Third Battle of Ypres. Defence Minister Bruce Billson said research identified seven Australian soldiers buried in the area, but who were not later exhumed for reinterment. They are 2Lt L. J. Corrigan, Pte J. A. Gibbens, Pte J. Hunter, Sgt C. N. McArthur, Sgt G. Calder, Pte G. R. Storey and Pte W. Williams. “It is far too early to say whether the remains discovered belong to any of the soldiers identified through the military research and it must be stressed, that despite the progress to date, the prospects of formally identifying individuals remain quite low,” Mr Billson said. |
