Copping it sweet

THE combined services ADF women’s Australian football team from Sydney and Canberra defeated a well-recruited NSW Police Services team in the annual NSW Police Games at Picken Oval Croydon Park on February 24.

ADF powered home to win 8.3 (51) to NSW Police 5.2 (32). Best for ADF were Cpl Amy Hall, Cpl Kristy Stroop, Cpl Emma Hender, Smn Hailey Merrick, Cpl Rebekah Allen (RAAF) and AB Candice Freeman.

Both teams tested each other out in the first quarter despite the fact that Police opened the goalscoring within 60 seconds of the start. Scores were level at 1.2 (8) each at the first change.

Scoring opportunities were reduced, but accuracy had increased in the second quarter, which produced three goals – two to Police side and one to ADF.

The ADF had more of the ball and were inside their 50m more often, but could not make the best of their opportunities, leaving the women in blue ahead by six points at half-time. Police stepped up a notch in the third quarter as the ADF let in two cheap goals and failed to score.

The job was still ahead of them in the final quarter, but with several changes to the onfield line-up and three goals in arrears, the ADF then showed they had come to play by kicking 6.1 (37) led by surprise package Smn Merrick.

NSW Police failed to build on their three-quater time score and never entered their attacking 50m in the last quarter.
