ski to win in Germany Edition 1162, March 22, 2007 |
|
AN ADF women’s team of four combined their military and skiing skills to great credit to win a bonus points section in the military patrol race at the British Army Biathlon Championships in January. The women were part of the ADF team which attended the British National Inter-Service and Army Biathlon and Cross Country Ski Championships at Rupholding in Germany. The ADF team invited to enter this gruelling 25km event consisted of Maj Fleur Froggatt (patrol commander). Flt-Lt Tina Willmett (2IC), Sgt Sonia Crockett and Spr Annie Young. In the event teams of four traverse alpine terrain, carrying 10kg backpacks while conducting a series of military tasks. The patrol race demands leadership, teamwork, fitness and military skills which give it the status of the most prestigious event of the British Army Biathlon Championships. Timed military kit inspections, weight checks and loading of ammunition began the event, followed by the formal inspection by GOC UK Spt Cmd in Germany, Maj-Gen Mungo Melvin. For the uniformity of the ADF team’s dress, bearing and drill (drill on skis with poles) and ability to answer all of the General’s questions on the regional area and British hierarchy, the Australian team was awarded the highest bonus score. The race took just under four hours and proved tough but exhilarating. Akin to a military skills competition on skis, the patrol race encapsulated a high degree of teamwork within a military context. |
