| Have say on your career By Lt-Col Ed Smeaton DOCM-A Career Adviser Edition 1162, March 22, 2007 |
|
THE mention of career management often evokes a strong reaction among Service people. Career management touches all of us, from postings to career development and promotion. And, of course, it affects our spouses, partners and children. A new project, scheduled for completion in June, is interested in your views on career management. As part of the $1 billion retention and recruitment package, Defence is developing the Strategic Career Management Framework (SCMF) for the career management of ADF personnel in the permanent forces. The framework will seek to complement Army’s career management philosophy and will be underpinned by two key principles: enabling personnel to be their own career managers by providing flexibility and choice, and giving the Service Chiefs greater flexibility to effectively manage their workforces. Issues such as locational stability, career paths or models, specialisation or sub-streaming, and posting and promotion policy and processes will be considered in the project. The SCMF also encompasses two other initiatives: recognition of prior learning (RPL) for personnel with alternative career experiences before joining or re-joining the ADF; and the development of guidelines on work/life balance in the ADF, which will be used to measure the impact of working in the ADF on the family and personal lives of Service members. These two initiatives have been included in this project because of their close links to career management. The SCMF project team, headed by Air-Cdre Ken Birrer, is interested in the perspectives of the Defence community on the subject of career management within the ADF. Confidentiality will be assured. Send submissions by April 9 to Maria.Avellaneda@defence.gov.au or Strategic Career Management Framework Project, Workforce Planning Branch, Unit 5, 101 Tennant Street, Fyshwick ACT 2609. Inquiries to Elizabeth Perrin on (02) 6127 4147.
