Corporal course goes west

Volume 11, No. 61, March 08, 2007
SOLDIERS from around the country have teamed up to conduct their own Subject 2 for Corporal course in Western Australia.

Course manager Capt Ashleigh Flanagan said that with limited positions at the Defence Force School of Signals, 109 Sig Sqn saw a need to conduct a course itself.

“We contacted some other units and we found out that other people were in a similar situation, so we decided we would run one here,” Capt Flanagan said.

“The equipment was all ours and we got 10 detachments out, but we couldn’t have done it without the support from the other units.”

Capt Flanagan said there was a balanced mix of full-time and reserve personnel who assisted and participated in the course.

“We calculated that with the 14 instructors, we had about 213 years worth of combined experience.”

One instructor, WO2 Alister McDonald, who had instructed on such courses at the school of signals, said it was rare for the course to be held by a Reserve unit.

The veteran instructor said both the participants and location compared favourably to the school.
