THE imposing Bushmaster was officially received into 3 Bde when Brig John Caligari accepted the new Infantry Mobility Vehicle (IMV) from the Defence Materiel Organisation on February 23.

Allocated to B Sqn 3/4 Cav Regt, deliveries commenced in December 2006 and will be complete by mid-July.

OC B Sqn Maj Steve De Marchi welcomed the vehicle, saying the Bushmaster would provide 3 Bde with a broader range of options from humanitarian relief to warfighting operations.

He said the Bushmaster was able to be employed for long periods and would provide improved protection and comfort for troops.

The IMV is being introduced to the brigade under the Army’s Hardened and Networked Army restructure, which will give the Army improved capability to fight 21st century battles.

The vehicle offers high levels of mobility and protection for the brigade’s soldiers on exercise and operations. It combines good performance, safety and comfort in a rugged vehicle.

Peter Lidsay, Parliamentary Secretary to the Defence Minister, said the “arrival of the Bushmaster at Lavarack Barracks underlines the importance of Townsville as one of Australia’s major garrison cities.”

The issuing of Bushmasters to 3 Bde is a continuation of the successful rollout plan of 300 vehicles.

Commander 3 Bde Brig Mike Phelps said, “the delivery of the this world class vehicle to 3 Bde is the result of a team effort by Defence and Thales Australia to remain focused on ensuring that the user received the best possible vehicle of its type”.
