Lavarack’s $6.4m upgrade

Volume 11, No. 61, March 08, 2007
A $6.4 MILLION upgrade and refurbishment of 11 Bde facilities at Lavarack Barracks is expected to begin this month.

Peter Lindsay, Parliame-ntary Secretary to the Defence Minister, announced on February 20 that the contract for the work had been awarded to Thiess Pty Ltd.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by early 2008.

Mr Lindsay said the refurbished facilities would enable Townsville-based 11 Bde units at Jezzine Barracks to relocate to Lavarack Barracks, allowing more effective operations and training.

“The project budget has been increased to allow the scope of work essential to relocate 11 Bde from Jezzine Barracks as one unit and to sustain the brigade’s operational effectiveness,” Mr Lindsay said.

The Army Reserve recruiting office at Jezzine Barracks will also be relocated to Lavarack Barracks in early 2008 as part of the project.
