Study to examine health

Volume 11, No. 60, February 22, 2007
PERSONNEL who have been deployed to the Solomon Islands have been invited to participate in a research project examining the long-term health issues of soldiers who have served overseas.

Conducted by the Centre for Military and Veterans’ Health, the Deployment Health Surveillance Program (DHSP) focuses on aspects of the physical and psychological health of current and past Defence personnel.

The first of the program’s research studies is the Solomon Islands Health Study and invitation packs to participate were sent to random past and present members early this year.

Timor, Bougainville and the MEAO studies will also start soon.

Through the research, the centre will compare the health of veterans of various deployments with a broader study sample of Defence members who did not deploy overseas.

Professor Annette Dobson, head of the program’s Scientific Research Team, said the studies would potentially enhance the health services and standards for deployed personnel and veterans.

“To better understand and deal with the health issues faced by deployed personnel and veterans, DHSP is reviewing current prevention, treatment and rehabilitation methods,” she said.
