ROYAL Tongan Marines in grass skirts and combat boots was one of the more unusual sights that greeted VCDF Lt-Gen Ken Gillespie during his tour of the Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste in January.

During the visit to both countries, the VCDF met soldiers deployed on Operation Astute and Anode. And while in Honiara, he was welcomed by the Tongan members of CTF 635 with an impressive display of their traditional dancing.

Lt-Gen Gillespie thanked the Australian soldiers for their ongoing work and conveyed a message of support from the Australian public.

He also met with senior leaders from Timor-Leste and the UN to reaffirm the ADF’s commitment to the stabilisation process.
