MANY soldiers enjoy the antics of Dikko’s zany cartoons, and CA Lt-Gen Peter Leahy is no different.

In fact, he has showcased his collection of personal and historical images for the ABC’s Insiders program. The segment, called “Talking Pictures” with Mike Bowers, will run in early March.

During the interview Lt-Gen Leahy commented on his particular fondness for the cartoons.

“There is something very stark about them,” he said. “They have a distinct Australian sense of humour, a military humour.”

Some of his favourites even hang on his home office wall. Among them is one by SSgt Bob Dikkenburg, or Dikko, that shows a caricature of Lt-Gen Leahy leaning up against his staff car under a voice bubble that reads “My other car is an Abrams.”

“I would like to have an Abrams in Sydney – it would help deal with some of the traffic problems,” he joked.

But the interview was not all about a good laugh. Lt-Gen Leahy also pointed out the importance of cartoons and social commentary. A cartoon by Geoff Pryor that hangs on his wall deals with the issue of females joining the combat ranks.

“Women are increasingly in combat roles,” he said. “They have a real contribution to make.”

During the taping Mr Bowers touched on how images have changed throughout different conflicts.
Insiders airs on ABC on Sundays at 9am.
