New station
THE Government has agreed to host a ground station for a US strategic and military satellite communications system at the Australian Defence Satellite Communication Station (ADSCS) at Geraldton in Western Australia. The joint Australian-US ground station would be sited within the grounds of ADSCS but would be unrelated to the existing activities of ADSCS, which would remain under separate Australian control, Defence Minister Brendan Nelson announced.

Weight lifting
DEFENCE has ordered four more Heavy Tank Transporters. The extra vehicles will provide an increased transport capability in Puckapunyal and Townsville. To date, nine of the original 14 have been delivered and the rest are expected by the end of the year.

Gearing up
THE survey of the Black Hawk wreckage off Fiji is expected to start in early March following the arrival of US Navy equipment. Two Antonov AN124 aircraft delivered the equipment to Sydney where it was transported by road to Fleet Base East. It was later fitted to a Defence Maritime Services vessel.

New command
AIR-CDRE Ian Meyn was appointed as the new Commander of HQ Norcom early this month. Based at Larrakeyah Barracks, Air Commodore Meyn will coordinate the efforts of Army, Navy and Air Force personnel in support of Operation Resolute.

Unknown soldiers
EXPERTS in battlefield archaeology will conduct a survey of a site in northern France in search of the remains of World War I diggers. It is believed more than 160 Australians killed in the 1916 Battle of Fromelles could be buried at the site known as Pheasant Wood.

Input wanted
A REVIEW of entitlements for non-custodial parents in the ADF is under way. The Directorate of Service Conditions is seeking input from ADF members, particularly non-custodial parents, their supervisors and managers. To provide input, email RUSDSCReview@defence.gov.au. Submissions will be taken until March 30.

Poster contest
THE winning entries in the CA’s poster competition, featured in Army late last year, will be announced in March. Judges are currently assessing the scores of impressive and imaginative entries.
