1RAR’s firm connections |

PREVENTING problems at the source has led to the development of an innovative system for JNCOs at 1RAR. The program works to develop the self-confidence of junior commanders by equipping them with the necessary skills to enable early recognition of personal issues that effect their soldiers. Chap Steve Brooks facilitates the program known as Making Connections.’ “What is foundational is the realisation that the most debilitating human condition is loneliness. Making Connections seeks to overcome this by identifying early when people are alienated by problems and are in need of support,” Chap Brooks said. “As they are often the first point of contact, it is essential that JNCOs are able to identify when their soldiers’ resilience is low, whether they are in need of help and where appropriate help lies.” Subject matter experts from agencies as diverse as the Army Psychology Corps, DCO and the Vietnam Veterans’ Counselling Service were key to providing a professional framework in which the program was developed. Cpl Adam Burke, a participant in the course, said the Making Connections gave him, as a section commander, “the ability to proactively manage difficult issues rather than just react to them”. For 1RAR CO Lt-Col Andrew Gallaway the potential and tangible benefits are straightforward – ensuring the operational readiness of the unit. Lt-Col Gallaway’s view is that many issues for soldiers, such as alcohol misuse, and their consequences are preventable. “Being able to prevent problems at an early stage minimises adverse administration action against soldiers and keeps this unit at the cutting edge,” he said. |
