International footy kicks off in Brisbane
Volume 11, No. 58, December 14, 2006

ENOGGERA’S Duncan Oval was the venue for a state against state battle that developed an international flavour as members of 6ESR played an International Rules match recently.

Each year, members of 6ESR gather for their regimental week that includes battling it out on the sports grounds.

This year the gathering took place in Brisbane, and to promote esprit de corps, Sydney-based 17 Const Sqn took on the local team, made up of members from 21 Const Sqn and 1 Topo Svy Sqn.

Played with plenty of enthusiasm the locals dominated each quarter and were eventual runaway winners, finishing the fourth quarter 33-14.

Similar to Australian Rules, the match is played in four quarters, and when carried for 10m, the ball must be bounced or kicked. A mix of Australian Rules Football and Gaelic Football, it is played with a soccer ball, which the lads had little problems adapting to.

Points scored are six for a goal in the net, as with soccer, three between the central posts or one for a behind.
