Rivals convert with new range

WHILE the recent motor show produced a plethora of interesting and exotic vehicles; what took my eye were the mid-range metal-top convertibles from Holden and Ford.

Advantages of a solid roof are considerable - better weather protection, much improved security and a reduction in noise levels. Peugeot, Renault and Volvo also have similar designs.

Holden already market the rather uninspiring Tigra, basically a metal-top two-seat Barina. A very welcome addition to the sporty Holden range is the Astra twin-top retractable hard-top convertible. This is a much superior product to the Astra soft top.

The twin-top is a particularly well designed European import and can morph from an attractive two-door coupe into a convertible in just 30 seconds. And with a 110kW 2.2 litre engine powering through a six speed manual or four-speed auto, drivers have the choice of sprightly performance or leisurely touring.

Meanwhile Ford announced at the show that it will release the Focus coupe-cabriolet in late 2007.

Although Ford did not release engine or transmission choices for Australia expect the excellent 2 litre four-speed and a choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed auto. And Ford boast their tin-top closes in just 29 seconds – one less than Holden!

Both are full four seaters. The Astra is packed full of goodies, and expect the Focus to be similarly equipped. Although Ford would not indicate a price range, a spokesman did say they would be very competitive with Holden.

Price for the Astra six-speed manual is $45,490. Add another $2000 for the auto.
