ARMY
recovered from an early setback to win the ACT Interservice Golf
Series for the first time since 2000 at Mollymook on the NSW South
Coast from October 23-27.
Army golf representative Col Tony Wallace said this years
event continued the tradition of close matches between the three
teams, with the result decided on the 20th green of the last match
between Navy and Air Force.
In the first match, in which Army lost narrowly to Air Force
by five matches to 6.5, the result could have gone either way,
with a number of close matches before the top-seeded match was
decided on the first extra hole, he said.
Army needed a big win against Navy to keep their hopes alive
in the series. The team order was reshuffled and this helped Army
to record one of the biggest wins in the tournaments history,
beating Navy nine matches to 2.5.
Air Force might have secured the title by defeating Navy in the
final match and for most of the day Air Force held the upper hand
before a late rally by Navy that sent the second-seeded match
to extra holes.
AB Glen Petersen sank a tricky downhill 7m putt on the 20th hole
to give Navy victory over Air Force.
The biggest green-side cheers came from the Army team because
Navys victory over Air Force (6.5 to five) meant that Army
were the interservice champions.
