Electronic Warfare bids farewell to Silver Fox
Volume 11, No. 55, November 02, 2006

Silver Fox: Maj Adrian Gilbert at his farewell dinner.

AS Army’s Electronic Warfare unit farewelled one of its longest serving members, the unit also celebrated an anniversary.

Deployed to Vietnam in 1966, 547 Sig Tp has celebrated its 40th anniversary at 7 Sig Regt in Queensland.

Held at Borneo Barracks, the ceremony gave current members the chance to meet about 40 Vietnam veterans of 547 Sig Tp.

The troop, which was attached to 104 Sig Sqn in Nui Dat, tracked the 275 Vietcong Regt prior to the Battle of Long Tan and developed aerial radio direction Finding techniques.

It also gave commanders an increased appreciation for the employment of signals intelligence.

7 Sig Regt has also farewelled one of its longest-serving and most dedicated soldiers.

Maj Adrian Gilbert – dubbed “The Silver Fox” – has retired after 36 years in RASigs. Over the weeks leading up to his farewell, 7 Sig Regt received many signals and anecdotes from across Army wishing Maj Gilbert well for his new career as president of the Cabarlah Golf Club.

At a formal dinner, Col Comdt RASigs Brig Brian Edwards (retd) praised Maj Gilbert for his service to Army.

The farewell dinner enabled those close to him to express their appreciation of his service.

The numerous gifts, salutations and congratulations received were testimony to the high regard in which he was held and a reminder of his colourful history.

The Borneo Barracks Officers’ Mess dedicated an annex of the mess to him with a plaque designating it as Adrian’s Wall.

7 Sig Regt, RASigs and the Australian Army will feel the absence of Maj Gilbert, whose dedication to duty and pride in the service are values that should be aspired to and emulated.
