A NEW $4.5 million environmentally friendly vehicle wash point has been opened at Gallipoli Barracks, Queensland.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence Senator Sandy Macdonald officially opened the 16-vehicle wash point at Enoggera in September.

“The vehicle wash point is required by Defence to maintain vehicle hygiene and prevent the spread of seeds, weeds and pests, to comply with legislative and policy obligations and to maintain vehicles in a clean and orderly state,” Mr Macdonald said.

Standing Orders in southern Queensland require Defence personnel to wash down their vehicles both before entering a training area and on departure.

He said the facility design would significantly reduce water consumption within the barracks.

The primary water source for the facility is the local dam within the base, which includes the installation of a Water Treatment Plant that will result in the only water loss from the system being through evaporation.

The redundant 18 mains-fed, non-recyclable water wash points throughout Gallipoli Barracks will be decommissioned.
