WATER restrictions might be in force in Queensland, but competitors in the annual Kokoda Barracks Cross-Country event still had to contend with water obstacles.
A number of contestants thought it might be a quick, dry track for the competition, but the Canungra area experienced a week of heavy rain leading up to the race.
Owing to the rain, a number of the streams that cross the course were flowing with arctic-cold water, that kind that makes a man think twice before jumping in. Overall the race was a success, with a few bumps, scratches and personal pride being the only casualties of the day.
Race organiser PTI Cpl Jason Stafford said that more than 200 competitors from HQ LWC, Training Support Wing, Officer Training Wing, WONCO Wing, the Defence Intelligence Training Centre (DIntTC) and civilian staff competed in this year’s 7.5km event.
The overall winner of the much sought-after Kokoda Barracks Cross-Country trophy was the Defence Intelligence Training Centre.
Commandant DIntTC Lt-Col Mick Lehmann said that the award made it a double for the year, with DIntTC also taking out the 2006 Kokoda Barracks Swimming trophy.
The major winners were: overall male winner, Maj Jeff Rudd, OTW, 28:40; overall female winner, Capt Liz Camilleri, HQ LWC, 37:35; first male walker, Sgt Brendan Fleetwood, DIntTC, 57:00; first female walker, WO1 Leanne Nimmo, DInt-TC, 55:36; and champion team, DIntTC.
