Big band wows ‘em
Volume 11, No. 47, July 13, 2006

Wow factor: Tom Burlinson sings up a storm in Melbourne at the opening night of the Army in Concert 2006 National Tour.

AUSTRALIAN film and theatre great Tom Burlinson has kicked off the Army in Concert 2006 National Tour in fine style , wowing the audience at the June 23 Melbourne tour-opener.
Melbourne Band musical director Maj Gordon Lambie said it was great to be back at the Melbourne Concert Hall.

“It has been five years since Army has had a presence in the hall, and many more still since that presence has been in our own right,” he said.
The tour has been organised to raise funds for Legacy, and Maj Lambie said the charity was in awe of what had been produced.

“Legacy, the sole recipient of the proceeds, is very appreciative of the funds that can be directed to their role of continuing to care for the families of our deceased veterans,” he said.
The opening night was a hit with the audience, who were amazed by the versatility and variety of the performers. The crowd demanded several encores, which were happily obliged.
Maj Lambie said a highlight of the night was Tom Burlinson’s performance.

“Tom transported us all to the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas and the show rooms of those iconic casinos on the Las Vegas strip with his truly authentic Frank Sinatra show,” he said.
“One could easily be forgiven for thinking that it was actually ol’ Blue eyes himself.”

The national tour will feature special guest performers in each region.

Rhonda Burchmore is scheduled to top the billing at the next performance at the Perth Concert Hall on July 16.

The tour will take in all capital cities as well as Newcastle, Wagga Wagga and Cairns until it concludes on October 21.
