MAP shows the way
Volume 11, No. 45, June 15, 2006
THE Combat MAP has been developed by the Land Warfare Centre (LWC).
Aptly-named, it is an in-combat planning tool for quick decision-making by junior commanders.
An acronym for Military Appreciation Process (MAP), the system includes MET-D, which stands for Mission, Enemy, and Terrain analysis, Decision and execution.
SI2 Officer Training Wing Maj Matt Clarke said he was proud to have been associated with the MAP’s development.
“It’s lean, logical, and effective. It is light on process and heavy on the things that really matter. It supports quick and workable solutions in a time-constrained and threatening environment,” he said.
“It is a simple and flexible method commanders can use to help them better appreciate any combat situation.
“Feedback from Combat MAP training has been positive, by more than 1000 students from the ranks of corporal to major who have been trained at LWC, and I am keen to know how well it works on operations.”
According to Maj Clarke, development is continuing, with the Training Technology Centre working on a CMAP computer-based learning CD that is expected to be released later this year.
Combat MAP doesn’t replace the Individual and Staff MAPs, but fills the gap between deliberate planning and battle drills.
It is for in-combat situations and has been developed through wide consultation with Land Command units and experimentation, including research into combat appreciations used by some of Australia’s allies.
