Hat an honour for Andy
Volume 11, No. 45, June 15, 2006
By WO1 Barry Miller

ANDY Steen, the oldest living former member of the Royal Australian Survey Corps, has celebrated his 100th birthday.
Mr Steen joined the Militia Survey Company, AMF, in 1940 at the age of 34. The company later became the Northern Command Fd Svy Coy then

1 Fd Svy Coy and finally 5 Fd Svy Coy.

In 1943 he transferred to the AIF along with the remaining AMF units and discharged in October 1944 after contracting scrub typhus on a trip to North Barnard Island off Innisfail.

OC 1 Topo Svy Sqn Maj Shaun Hoffman joined family, friends and members of the Ex Survey Association’s Queensland Branch to celebrate Mr Steen’s big day on May 6.

Maj Hoffman presented the old digger with a slouch hat bearing the corps badge and colour patch of 1 Topo Svy Sqn – the same colour patch worn by the centenarian throughout his service.

Standing tall, accompanied by Doris, his wife of 67 years, Mr Steen spoke in a hearty voice as he expressed his thanks to everyone for their attendance and good wishes.
