USMC impressed by JNCOs in Iraq
Volume 11, No. 39, March 23, 2006
US MARINE Corps Combat Development Commander Lt-Gen James Mattis has visited Australia to see how the Australian Army conducts JNCO training.
The visit stemmed from Lt-Gen Mattis’ experience in Iraq where he was impressed by the Australian JNCOs serving on Op Catalyst, according to Brig John Caligari, CoS TC-A.
“The visit gave him a look at Army training from ARTC, Kapooka to the Sub 1 Cpl at Land Warfare Centre detachment in south Queensland, and involved all steps in between. I believe he left with a good understanding of our system and definitely has in mind some ideas for improving the USMC NCO training system, based on our experience” Brig Caligari said.
He said Lt-Gen Mattis was particularly impressed with the TC-A instructor to trainee ratio (1:12), which is significantly better than the USMC. He also recognised the benefits of a well structured training continuum.
An exchange program will now be set up as Comd TC-A and Lt-Gen Mattis agreed both armies would be well served by a Long Look-type exchange.
Lt-Gen Mattis also visited with CA Lt-Gen Peter Leahy and was briefed on the Hardened and Networked Army plan.
