Australians were profoundly moved by the disaster that struck the
Indian Ocean on Boxing Day 2004.
Every ADF member would be aware of the fantastic performance of
our military teams and they have rightfully received much public
praise.
Perhaps less well known is the contributions made by the civilian
health teams that were first on the ground to provide much needed
surgical support to the victims of the tragedy.
When I first heard that a book had been written about the Australian
civilian health teams that provided the initial response to the
Indonesian province of Aceh, I feared that it would be superficial,
sensational and focus on the efforts of a few high profile individuals.
Having read the book twice since its release, I am happy to say
that none of my fears have been realised and I consider this book
to be mandatory reading for any health professional (civilian or
military) who could be called on to provide health support to a
major natural disaster in a developing country.
Angels of Aceh is a great read, a unique source of information and
experience and a very fitting tribute to the men and women who gave
so much in support of fellow human beings during their time of need.
