Training culture check

AN audit will be conducted of ADF training establishments over the next five months.

CDF ACM Angus Houston said the aim of the audit was to establish a baseline from which to drive change in the ADF’s schools and training culture.

The initiative is in addition to significant reforms announced by the Government last year to enhance the ADF’s military justice system. Last year’s Senate Committee Report into the Effectiveness of Australia’s Military Justice System identified ADF culture as a possible cause of shortfalls in the military justice system.

The CDF said he was committed to implementing the Government’s reforms of the military justice system.

“As I flagged at the Senate Estimates hearings, the military justice implementation team has completed arrangements for the conduct of this audit. The audit team will now begin its work,” he said.

The team will comprise Andrew Podger, a former Public Service Commissioner; Catherine Harris, a company chairperson and former University councillor; and Maj-Gen Roger Powell (retd), a team leader of major public sector inquiries. ACM Houston said the audit would be open and transparent.
