Personnel - just what the doctrine ordered

Clear language

ARMY has been at the forefront of harmonising our current operational terms, definitions, abbreviations and military symbols with those of NATO and ABCA forces.

Some might ask, “Why are we doing this and how does this value-add to Australian Army doctrine?” In brief, it’s all about developing a better understanding of the areas of commonality and difference with our allied and coalition partners, which will aid clarity and consistency in Army’s operational language and our doctrine.

The Defence Glossary (formerly known as the Defence Language Management System) on the DRN is the ADO’s central repository for all terms, definitions, abbreviations and military symbols, of which the ADF’s portion is referred to as the Operational Glossary.

For Army it provides users with an up-to-date military glossary and a method for suggesting the inclusion of additional information or new terms, definitions, abbreviations or military symbols. Business rules as well as guidelines governing the Operational Glossary are still being developed.

The CIOG will complete an audit of the Defence Glossary by 2006 to ensure the accuracy of the information. For Army, the Defence Glossary will become “live” at the completion of the audit, anticipated to be January 2006. The link for the glossary is http://dlms.dcb.defence.gov.au/.

CLM update

CURRENTLY the Command, Leadership and Management doctrine hierarchy has three publications that are close to completion.

LWP-G 0-2-5 All Corps Troop/Platoon Field Handbook is completed pending the arrival of the latest doctrine on first aid. A significant amendment to MAP doctrine has been finalised. Comment on the draft LWD 0-2-2 Character publication has been collated, with editing and formatting now progressing.

A redesign of LWP-G 0-2-3 All Corps Soldiers Aide Memoire will start after the issue of the Troop/Platoon Field Handbook. The final writing phase for the draft LWD 0-2-1 Operational Psychology publication will be completed this month, at which stage it will be distributed for comment. The POC for CLM publications is Maj Mark Langdon, who can be contacted at mark.langdon1@defence.gov.au or through ADEL online.
