Personnel - just what the doctrine ordered

Language potential put to test

LANGUAGE aptitude testing will be conducted around Australia next month.

The LAT is a prerequisite for ADF School of Languages (ADF Langs) language courses of more than 22 weeks.

Testing will take three hours and results are supplied a short time after the test. The schedule is:

  • September 12, Sydney
  • September 13 Canberra
  • September 14, Melbourne
  • September 15 Townsville
  • September 16 Darwin
  • September 21 Brisbane

Languages taught at ADF Langs are Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Persian Farsi, Khmer, Indonesian, Malay, French and Portuguese. No previous language training is necessary to undertake study at ADF Langs.

Manager for Languages – Army Bob Tyne said people who sit the test were graded on a language aptitude scale which demonstrated their ability to study different diffulties of langauages.

French and Portuguese are low difficulty while languages such as Korean, Mandarin Chinese and Arabic are the most complex.

The Army has hundreds of registered linguists in 82 different languages.

Mr Tyne encourages personnel to register their language skills with him. Use of the language may attract an allowance.

Mr Tyne will attend each test session to provide a brief and answer questions.
