WHILE the ADF trained in ways to protect our borders during Ex
Talisman Sabre, a platoon of MPs were on duty to protect Camp
Growl and Camp Rocky.
SWBTA MP Pl commander Capt Mark Russell said the role of the platoon
at Camp Growl was multi-levelled.
“We maintained security at the main entrance to SWBTA, provided
garrison policing at Camp Growl, assisted in the movement of traffic
to and from the exercise area and provided general MP support
on demand,” he said.
A 24-hour rotational shift ensured the front gate and other posts
were always manned.
Capt Russell said the MPs also provided advice to Excon on traffic
movement and safety.
He said that overall, road safety on the range was very good.
“Safety limits are there for a reason and this was accepted widely.
We had few incidents where we had to talk to people – generally
just to remind them about speeding in the AO.”
Cooperation between ADF and US troops at Camp Growl ensured no
security issues during the exercise.
Capt Russell said SWBTA MP Pl was made up of members from 22 Pl
and 24 Pl.
“These platoons come from opposite sides of the country. Their
professionalism in working together was excellent.”
