QUICK
action by an indigenous Norforce soldier has brought recognition
from Commander Norcom Cdre Cam Darby.
LCpl Ida Waianga, of South Goulburn Island, was fishing near his
community 250km east of Darwin in early March when he saw a Foreign
Fishing Vessel (FFV) stranded on a mudflat.
Using the training he had received at Norforce, LCpl Waianga contacted
his HQ, which immediately passed the details of his sighting to
HQ Norcom.
A Navy patrol boat was dispatched to the location where it apprehended
the FFV.
Presenting LCpl Waianga with a certificate of appreciation and a
medallion, Cdre Darby said LCpl Waianga’s actions were a credit
to his community and highlighted the importance of the role indigenous
communities play in the defence of Australia.
A very proud LCpl Waianga said, “We have been trained to report
any suspicious activities because of the possible threat to our
country.
“It was a satisfying feeling to know the FFV was apprehended and
the community felt safe because the Defence Force is looking after
them.”
CO Norforce Lt-Col Richard Parker said Norforce was very proud of
LCpl Waianga’s efforts.
“He, along with our many other soldiers in remote communities, provide
a significant capability for the defence of our northern coastline,”
Lt-Col Parker said. “They are very proud of the service they give
and they are well supported by their communities.
“Our soldiers do not look for recognition but LCpl Waianga’s award
is well deserved.”
