Memorial
celebrates VE Day
By Sue Caddaye and Jen Riley
THE Australian War Memorial (AWM) held its first open day in
three years on May 7. Defence was there in force to support
the day. From an Iroquois and Sea Hawks to the Red Berets and
the Federation Guard, the ADF's contribution day was well received.
Overall there were more than 13,000 visitors to the AWM and
many of them got to get up close with Defence equipment and
personnel.
"It was good to come down from Oakey for the day and let the
kids see the choppers. They could crawl on the aircraft and
get up close and have a look."
- Capt Shaun Willson, Iroquois pilot
"It's been a good day. We've been flat out doing interactive
stuff with the mine detector. All the lollies went in the first
couple of hours, but the kids have had a fun day and got a little
bit of education as well as a lot of entertainment".
- Sgt Mark Watson, SME |

"It
was most encouraging to see young kids come out in numbers and
be actively involved in activities. It's been a great family
day".
