It
takes courage
A SERGEANT from 2 Cav Regt savaged CA Lt-Gen Peter Leahy
at a dining-in night at Robertson Barracks, biting his
finger in what's been described as a foul attack.
The incident occurred when Sgt Courage was invited to
the foyer of the 1 Bde officers' mess late last year.
Witnesses said Lt-Gen Leahy attempted to stroke Sgt Courage,
when Sgt Courage lunged and bit him.
RSM 2 Cav Regt WO1 Robert Aboud said Lt-Gen Leahy immediately
requested charges be laid.
"So he was subsequently charged with assaulting a superior
officer, and received a servere reprimand and a fine of
seven days' rodents," he said.
WO1 Aboud said the tasty treats were withheld from Sgt
Courage, who, as a wedge-tail eagle and 2 Cav Regt mascot,
finds them almost as appetising as fingers.
Sgt Courage pleaded guilty to the charge, but WO1 Aboud
said he provided a convincing array of mitigating circumstances
to retain his rank.
"He was unsettled by the crowd and he was unsure of the
CA's intent.
"And also, as a bird of prey, it's his natural reaction
to protect himself - and the CA's fingers appeared quite
tasty," WO1 Aboud said.
Sgt Courage failed to draw blood during the attack, and
WO1 Aboud credited the speed at which Lt-Gen Leahy recoiled
from the attack as saving him from further savagery.
"The quick reaction of the CA prevented severe injury
from taking effect."
It was also requested that the summary authority not consider
a custodial punishment, as it was considered Sgt Courage
wouldn't learn from being caged. |
