FOR Maj Matt Jones, helping the Iraqi people prepare for their first free election has been his job for the past six months.

Maj Jones played a key role in the planning and preparation of the country’s historic elections held on the January 30.

He undertook the task as a member of the operational planning cell of the Multi- National Force Headquarters in Baghdad.

His main task was as one of the lead election security planners, helping to prepare the security plan to create the right environment for the conduct of the election.

Liaison with key Iraqi personnel was a necessary part of his job. He participated in Iraqi national security meetings, and worked with the Iraqi government in advising it of appropriate security measures.

He praised the Iraqi people with whom he worked in preparing for the election.

“The outstanding success of the elections was because of the Iraqis, and the Iraqi organisation,” he said.
