and Outside School Hours Care facilities from July.
The tender is looking at:
Biological
weapons workshop
A NEW era of Asia Pacific cooperation has dawned with the recent
joint hosting of a biological weapons workshop by Indonesia and
Australia in Melbourne.
The first of its kind in the region, the Biological Weapons Convention
Regional Workshop attracted delegates from 12 Asia-Pacific nations.
The purpose of the event was to discuss ways to halt the proliferation
of biological weapons, and to assist regional officials in implementing
the Geneva Biological Warfare Convention.
Solutions put forward by the forum included more rigorous codes
of conduct for scientists, revised bioscience legislation and improved
security procedures for the storage of toxins.
Further important meetings are scheduled for later this year.
War memorial grant
THE South African war memorial in Adelaide will be restored thanks
to a $10,300 grant.
The grant was made under the Australian Government’s Commendations
program “Saluting Their Service”.
Since the South African memorial was unveiled in 1904, it has become
discoloured and water has entered its joints.
The refurbishment will include replacing the roof and damaged lettering.
ADFA cadets inducted
MORE than 270 Army and Air Force officer cadets and Navy midshipmen
have paraded at ADFA to mark their induction into the ADF.
Guest of honour CDF Gen Peter Cosgrove wished the cadets every success
for their future in the ADF and welcomed overseas students from
Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and Thailand.
Since January the cadets have been engaged in an initial period
of military training that included first aid, field craft, military
law and weapons handling.
Jesse Slater farewelled
JESSE Slater, a nine-year-old boy featured on the People page in
the February 24 edition of Army, has died of leukaemia. Jesse lost
his battle with cancer on February 12.
Jesse had wanted to become a soldier or fireman so the Army sent
a Land Rover to his birthday party last year and gave him a slouch
hat.
The hat was placed on Jesse’s coffin at his funeral.
