Environmental commendations

THE creation of an annual CDF/Secretary Environment and Heritage commendation is set to boost environmental management within Defence. Applications for the inaugural issue of the commendations close on April 20.

They are open to Defence personnel who have contributed to the reduction of environmental risk through exceptional environmental and heritage management.

Military and APS members, units and groups are encouraged to submit applications detailing their success in creating positive environmental outcomes.

The presentation of the commendations by CDF Gen Peter Cosgrove and Secretary of Defence Ric Smith will coincide with the UN World Environment Day on June 5.

Defence childcare tender

DEFENCE has called for tenders to provide Defence Childcare Centres and Outside School Hours Care facilities from July.

The tender is looking at:

  • additional childcare placements;
  • management and operation of Defence owned or leased Child Care Centres and Outside School Hours Care facilities; and
  • childcare services that provide Defence families with continuing access to high quality childcare on a user pays basis at competitive market rates. The successful tenderer should be known by April and will be required to meet, at a minimum regulatory, licensing and accreditation requirements including staff/child ratios and staff qualifications.

Biological weapons workshop

A NEW era of Asia Pacific cooperation has dawned with the recent joint hosting of a biological weapons workshop by Indonesia and Australia in Melbourne.

The first of its kind in the region, the Biological Weapons Convention Regional Workshop attracted delegates from 12 Asia-Pacific nations.

The purpose of the event was to discuss ways to halt the proliferation of biological weapons, and to assist regional officials in implementing the Geneva Biological Warfare Convention.

Solutions put forward by the forum included more rigorous codes of conduct for scientists, revised bioscience legislation and improved security procedures for the storage of toxins.

Further important meetings are scheduled for later this year.

War memorial grant

THE South African war memorial in Adelaide will be restored thanks to a $10,300 grant.

The grant was made under the Australian Government’s Commendations program “Saluting Their Service”.

Since the South African memorial was unveiled in 1904, it has become discoloured and water has entered its joints.

The refurbishment will include replacing the roof and damaged lettering.

ADFA cadets inducted

MORE than 270 Army and Air Force officer cadets and Navy midshipmen have paraded at ADFA to mark their induction into the ADF.

Guest of honour CDF Gen Peter Cosgrove wished the cadets every success for their future in the ADF and welcomed overseas students from Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and Thailand.

Since January the cadets have been engaged in an initial period of military training that included first aid, field craft, military law and weapons handling.

Jesse Slater farewelled

JESSE Slater, a nine-year-old boy featured on the People page in the February 24 edition of Army, has died of leukaemia. Jesse lost his battle with cancer on February 12.

Jesse had wanted to become a soldier or fireman so the Army sent a Land Rover to his birthday party last year and gave him a slouch hat.

The hat was placed on Jesse’s coffin at his funeral.

Training Scholarship

PTE Samuel Butler of the AACC has been awarded the 2005 Reverend Dennis Johnson Ministry Training Scholarship.

The $2000 scholarship, offered by the Anglican congregation of The Anzac Memorial Chapel of St Paul RMC, will help Pte Butler complete his theological studies.

Pte Butler plans to be ordained as a military chaplain.

The scholarship is named in memory of a former RMC chaplain who helped build the chapel at RMC.

Bank on Red Cross blood

BLOOD donations over March and April will drop at a time Australians need the blood service the most.

The Red Cross is seeking donations from soldiers to maintain its level of 4000 blood donations a day.
