Listening Post

Now hear this

WELCOME to the first instalment of Listening Post, which aims to take a lighter look at Army life.

Tucked in

WHAT provides more satisfaction than pointing out to a colleague that he has his lanyard tucked into his pants? Not saying anything, of course. That was the case recently when one soldier wore his lanyard in the non-regulation fashion for a few hours before he noticed.

Dreadlocked

THE Army's last two members to return from the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea found accommodation scarce in Addis Ababa on their way home. There was no religious holiday nor a major corporate conference. Rastifarians had converged on the city for Bob Marley's birthday.

Kickback

AT LAST, a chance to avenge the Wallabies' Rugby World Cup loss to England. The London Development Agency is naming a new bridge leading to the new Wembley Stadium. Go to the link http://www.lda.gov.uk/server.php?show=ConForm.9 and vote for the new Wembley Pedestrian bridge to be named "The John Eales Bridge", reason - "Rugby Hero".

It's a fact

AmazonFemale warrior groups

Caucasians: A tribe of warrior women who lived between the Black and Caspian Seas along the Thermido River in about 8000BC. At the age of 8, each girl had her right breast seared with a hot iron so that no mammary glands would grow to impede the use of a bow. The procedure was also believed to extirpate the masculine tendencies that were thought to emanate from the right side.

Libyans: A pre-Homeric tribe that lived along the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and wore red leather armour in battle.

Gagans: North African Amazons who, until the tribe converted to Christianity, routinely killed baby boys.

Hamitics: A tribe that lived between the Nile and Red Sea.

Sauromatians:
A tribe that lived along the Don River in Russia. According to Herodotus, these women were not permitted to bear children until they had killed three male enemies.

Euryple's Amazons: The tribe that captured Bablyon in 1760BC.

The Amazon Amazons: A tribe that attacked Portuguese explorers in the 1500s along the Amazon River.
