173
heads back to Queensland
THERE’S
been a change to the skies over the Top End with B Tp, 173 Survl
Sqn ending its time in Darwin to return to Queensland.
B Tp has been operating two DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft in support
of Headquarters Norcom for about eight years.
The aircraft meant enhancement of the operational capability and
training activities of the Regional Force Surveillance Units,
in particular 51FNQR and Norforce.
The DHC-6 Twin Otter is primarily designed to be capable of short-field
take-off and landing on unprepared strips, ideal for operations
in the remote north of Australia.
The aircraft can also be used for dropping stores, parachuting
cargo and aero-medical evacuation by day and night, in all weather
without any structural modification. For a light commuter aircraft,
this is a significant capability.
Oakey’s 1 Avn Regt will be moving to Robertson Barracks in the
coming months, and with 161 Recce Sqn will provide integral aviation
support to 1 Bde with the new Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter.
Late last year B Tp closed and returned the aircraft to their
civilian operator and owners Hawker Pacific.
The parade was officiated by Commander Norcom Air-Cdre Steven
Walker, who expressed his appreciation to the officers and soldiers
of B Tp and acknowledged their outstanding performance and professionalism.
Members of 173 Survl Sqn at Oakey are now operating the new Raytheon
B350 King Air aircraft.
