Message
from the Chief
THE
recent Christmas/New Year period has been characterised by a number
of short notice deployments affecting many Army personnel and their
families.
1RAR ready company group deployed to the Solomon Islands on December
23 in response to the murder of Australian federal policeman Adam
Dunning.
Soldiers from numerous units including 1CER, 1HSB, 1JSU, 171 Sqn
and the LSF, have responded quickly and magnificently to provide
life-saving support to our neighbours affected by the tsunami disaster
of December 26 and its aftermath.
Many personnel were recalled from leave to staff headquarters and
logistic installations essential to the support of those deploying.
These deployments have occurred during the period traditionally
set aside to be with families and to enjoy a well-deserved break.
I am proud of the efforts of all Army personnel who have responded
to these calls for action. I appreciate your efforts and your willingness
to forego your personal plans to contribute to this critical humanitarian
relief effort. Your response will make a difference.
To those of you returning from leave and who have not yet been directly
affected by this tragedy, I would ask that you spare a thought for
your comrades who are currently operating under very adverse and
uncomfortable conditions. Your role is to provide whatever comfort
and support you can.
The tragedy in Southeast Asia is of epic proportions. At this time
our sympathy must be extended to those who have suffered. I expect
that the traditional qualities of the Australian digger, resolve,
strength and compassion, will sustain us in the testing days to
come. I wish those of you who have deployed or are deploying all
the best and thank you for your efforts to date.
