DONT
fall under false illusions with this film. Yes, Buffy is in it, but
this is no teen horror flick and she’s up against something
far more terrifying than vampires.
Apparently, if somebody dies in great sorrow or a great rage, a curse
is born.
The emotion remains to claim the lives of all who visit that place
... or so they say in Japan and in remakes of really cool Japanese
horror movies.
The film definitely holds up to the fear inspired by the original
and in some aspects surpasses it.
It works on your mind on many levels with its convoluted plot. It
forces you to think quite deeply about just what is going on and,
with the aid of some truly disturbing visuals and sounds, it will
have you as confused and terrified as the characters.
Despite the confusion, there is one simple resolution: if you visit
the cursed place, you will die. You can try to run away but you are
never safe from the empty-eyed spirit woman.
A sense of realism is added to the dark mood by dispensing with over-the-top
special effects. There is little blood and gore, no men in monster
suits, no madman with an axe and no screaming teenagers. Just sheer
terror.
If you see this alone, sit in the back row of the cinema, just so
you’ll know there is nobody behind you. If your house has a
staircase, go to the pub after seeing this movie.
Any film that can make the audience feel as fearful as the characters
portrayed in it is definitely a winner. That Buffy chick can actually
act, too.

Don’t sleep alone
Rating:
As fans of the horror genre would know, The Grudge is a remake of
the Japanese film, Ju-On , both directed by Takashi Shimizu. Not having
seen any of his other creations, I can say with complete affirmation,
that The Grudge was 100 per cent shrink-in-your-seat scary.
Yoko goes to care for Emma, a sick, elderly woman, and while cleaning
the house hears an unusual noise coming from the ceiling. She scampers
up and meets something quite unexpected. The next day, Karen (Geller)
is sent to care for Emma, because Yoko didn’t show up for work. All
sorts of very creepy things happen, and the mystery begins. Turns
out there’s a bit of a curse on the house that started when a man
killed his wife, son and cat in a jealous rage.
The next occupants of the house fall prey to the curse – as does anyone
who crosses the threshold. There are lots of nasty scenes of ghoulish
forms with hacked-up greenish skin and empty black eyes scaring people
to death. A creepy catboy also gets around quietly spooking people
out then hissing at them. The “agggghhhhkhkhk” noise the spirits make
ensures you’ll jump at every sound when you get home.
