THE recent rotation of SECDET5 into the now “famous” Baghdad flats, has put the detachment at its highest manning and operational tempo since its creation in May 2003.

SECDET5 2IC Capt Andrew Moss said the increase in numbers is linked directly to the introduction of the Iraqi Army Training Team (IATT) in April this year and SECDET’s added responsibility of providing security to the team.

“Our role has changed slightly,” he said.

“Iraq is now a sovereign nation again, and as a result, we’ve had to change our methods of doing things without reducing force protection. We’ve had to change the way we approach things so the embassy staff can go about their business.”

SECDET provides security to the embassy staff in convoy, close personal protection and protection of strong-points,
In providing security to the local area, SECDET interacts with Diplomatic Protective Services personnel, who are used to provide an initial ring of security around the immediate area.

“They have certainly come a long way. The Infantry platoon commanders have been responsible for their training and ensuring they do the right thing.”
